Portland Deep Tissue Massage

A deep tissue massage is a beneficial treatment, but did you know it is not the same as a Swedish massage?

Most often, a deep tissue massage is given to treat chronic pain, rehabilitation from an injury, fibromyalgia, and other specific conditions. With very specific techniques, this type of massage therapy involves applying very firm pressure to reach the deepest layers of fascia and muscle to help relieve pain and increase mobility. The techniques, pressure applied, and overall experience from this type of massage varies greatly from a classic Swedish massage that most clients request.

We understand that you may not know which massage is best for you. Below, we will explain the difference between Swedish massage and deep tissue massage. And as always, our licensed massage therapists are available to discuss this even further. What is the difference between a deep tissue massage and a Swedish massage?

Differences between a deep tissue massage and a traditional Swedish massage come down to the following factors:
  1. Overall purpose of the massage
  2. Strokes used
  3. Pressure applied

1. The overall purpose of the massage
A Swedish massage is a great massage if this is your first time. The strokes and pressure are generally lighter and the massage is more geared toward relaxation and relieving tension. The overall goal of this type of massage treatment is to relax the body, improve circulation, and alleviate muscle tension.
The deep tissue massage, as its name suggests, focuses on the deeper muscle and fascia within the body with the goal of rehabilitating injuries or strains and treating chronic pain. It will definitely not be as relaxing as a Swedish massage because it is intended to treat deeper parts of the body.

2. Strokes used in the massage
A Swedish massage used five basic strokes, including long strokes, kneading, circular motions, fast tapping, and rapidly shaking certain muscles. While pressure applied is customizable, a Swedish massage is typically more gentle and aimed at relaxation. Talk to your Portland massage therapist to discuss your needs and problem areas.
A deep tissue massage uses slower, stronger strokes to get to the deep tissues in the body. That being said, our mobile massage therapists will often use their hands, elbows, fingertips, knuckles, and forearms to reach those muscles and fascia deep within the areas you are experiencing pain.

3. Pressure applied
As mentioned above, Swedish massages tend to be more gentle than the more focused deep tissue massage. That being said, there can sometimes be pain associated with a deep tissue massage, as well as side effects that are important to be aware of.
During a deep tissue massage, most people will experience some discomfort, but it's important to let your masseuse know if you are in pain. While our therapists are highly trained and understand the anatomy of the body to be working on you in this way, the procedure itself can be uncomfortable.
In addition, it is common to feel some discomfort a day or two after you receive a Portland deep tissue massage. This is because of the lactic acid that is released during your massage. Drinking  a lot of water is the best thing to  do to ease this discomfort, but you can rest assured that it is totally normal.

Is a deep tissue massage best for me?

Generally, deep tissue massage is not for those who are just looking for overall relaxation, or for newbies to massage treatment. Those suffering from chronic pain, limited mobility, or who are recovering from an injury benefit most from this type of massage. And of course there are always those who like deep, hard massages, and we are able to cater to those individuals too!

Here are some conditions in which a deep tissue massage can provide great benefits:
  • Lower back pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sports injury
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Limited mobility
  • Injury recovery (whiplash, car accidents, falls, etc.)
  • Arthritis pain
  • Upper back pain
  • Neck pain

Anyone with these conditions may benefit from a mobile deep tissue massage. It's important to note that a great way to prevent sports injuries would be to consider a sports massage.
